Annotations on “The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra,” The [法華文句記] (Chin Fa-hua-wen-chü-chi; Hokke-mongu-ki): A ten-volume commentary by Miao-lo (711–782) on The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra, one of T’ien-t’ai’s three major works. It clarifies the meaning of T’ien-t’ai’s teachings on the whole text of the Lotus Sutra and refutes interpretations of the sutra advanced by the Flower Garland (Chin Hua-yen), Three Treatises (San-lun), and Dharma Characteristics (Fa-hsiang) schools. Miao-lo also addresses the controversy over the position of the “Entrustment” chapter in the Lotus Sutra, that is, whether it comes after the “Supernatural Powers” (twenty-first) chapter or at the end of the sutra. He upholds Kumārajīva’s view that placed the “Entrustment” chapter after the “Supernatural Powers” chapter, refuting the opposing view set forth by Tz’u-en and Hsüan-tsang.
