yojana [由旬] (, Pali; yujun): A unit of measurement used in ancient India, said to equal the distance that the royal army was thought able to march in a day. One yojana is considered to be about 7 kilometers, although there are several other approximations, such as 9.6, 18, and 24 kilometers. The Sanskrit word yojana implies “yoking,” indicating the distance that oxen yoked to royal carts traverse in a day.
