Jetri [祇陀太子] (; Pali Jeta; Gida-taishi): A son of Prasenajit, ruler of the Kosala kingdom in ancient India. When Sudatta, a wealthy Buddhist lay practitioner, sought to build a monastery as an offering to Shakyamuni Buddha, Prince Jetri offered a grove and land he owned as a site for the monastery and helped Sudatta build it. It came to be called Jetavana Monastery, Jetavana meaning “Jetri’s Grove.” Jetri was later killed by his younger brother, Virūdhaka, because Jetri disapproved of Virūdhaka’s massacre of the Shākyas, the tribe to which Shakyamuni belonged.
