Jayata [闍夜多・闍夜那] (n.d.) (; Jayata or Jayana): The nineteenth of Shakyamuni’s twenty-three, or the twentieth of his twenty-four, successors. The Record of the Lineage of the Buddha and the Patriarchs describes him as a native of northern India. According to A History of the Buddha’s Successors, he was widely revered for his meticulous observance of the precepts. Both documents state that he received the Buddha’s teachings from Kumārata (also known as Kumāralāta) and transferred them to Vasubandhu.
