Vairochana [毘盧遮那仏] (; Birushana-butsu): A Buddha who appears in the Flower Garland, Brahmā Net, and Mahāvairochana sutras. The name Vairochana was rendered in Chinese as Light Shining Universally. The Flower Garland Sutra describes his pure land called Lotus Treasury World. A great image of Vairochana Buddha, erected at Tōdai-ji temple in Nara, Japan, by a 743 edict of Emperor Shōmu, was consecrated in 752. The True Word ( Shingon) school equates Vairochana with its central deity, Mahāvairochana. The True Word teachings regard the entire universe as a manifestation of that Buddha.
