Bamboo Staff school [竹杖外道] ( Chikujō-gedō): A reference to any of several different groups of Brahmans in Shakyamuni’s time whose members are said to have carried staves. The members of one such group are known to have killed Shakyamuni’s disciple Maudgalyāyana. According to The Monastic Rules on Various Matters, Maudgalyāyana came across some Brahmans of the Bamboo Staff school who engaged him in discussion, whereupon he refuted their teacher. Enraged, they beat him to death with their staves. A Brahman of another Bamboo Staff school is known as the one who attempted to measure Shakyamuni Buddha’s height with his bamboo staff, but discovered that his staff was too short to take the measurement.
