breath-counting meditation [数息観] ( ānāpāna-smriti or ānāpāna-samādhi; susoku-kan): Also, counting-of-breath meditation. One of the five meditations. A method of quieting the mind by counting one’s breaths. This meditative practice prepares one to enter samādhi, a high level of serene meditative contemplation. The Sanskrit word ānāpāna means breath or breathing. Smriti means mindfulness, awareness, memory, or remembrance, and samādhi means concentration, contemplation, or meditation.
