Brief History of Japan, A [扶桑略記] ( Fusō-ryakki): A work of Japanese history centering on Buddhism. It covers the period from the reign of the legendary Emperor Jimmu through Emperor Horikawa (r. 1086–1107). Written in chronological order by Kōen (d. 1169), a priest of the Japanese Tendai school, it contains biographies of priests, histories of temples, and stories related to Buddhism. The author, Kōen, is also known as a teacher of Hōnen, the founder of the Pure Land (Jōdo) school in Japan.
