lay nun ［尼］ ( ama): A female believer of Buddhism who has shaven her head in the manner of a Buddhist nun, but continues to live in society as a layperson. Lay nun is the female equivalent of lay priest (nyūdō). “Lay nun” was often affixed to the names of women who had been tonsured yet retained their lay status.
