hundred blessings [百福] ( hyaku-fuku): Also, hundredfold merit, hundred meritorious acts, or hundred kinds of good fortune. The blessings needed to obtain any one of a Buddha’s thirty-two features, which can be acquired by accumulating a hundred blessings, i.e., performing a hundred meritorious acts. According to The Great Commentary on the Abhidharma, to obtain all thirty-two features and become a Buddha requires continuous practice for a hundred major kalpas. The “Parable of the Phantom City” (seventh) chapter of the Lotus Sutra reads, “World hero without peer, you who adorn yourself with a hundred blessings, you have attained unsurpassed wisdom—we beg you to preach for the sake of the world.”
