Nichigen-nyo [日眼女] (1242–1303): A lay follower of Nichiren and the wife of Shijō Kingo, a samurai who lived in Kamakura in Japan and served the Ema family of the ruling Hōjō clan. Nichigen-nyo (literally, Lady Sun Eye) is most likely the name Nichiren gave her. Their first daughter Tsukimaro (Full Moon) and the second, Kyō’ō (Sutra King), were named by Nichiren. Nichigen-nyo received several letters from Nichiren. When Shijō Kingo visited Nichiren, who was then in exile on Sado Island, Nichiren praised Nichigen-nyo for her faith and her willingness to send her husband to Sado, even though, in such perilous times, she had no one else on whom to rely.
