Nichinyo [日女] (n.d.): A lay follower of Nichiren in Japan. She is thought to have been either the wife of Ikegami Munenaka, the elder of the two Ikegami brothers, or a daughter of the lay priest Matsuno Rokurō Saemon, a believer in Suruga Province. Little information about her exists outside of two extant letters to her from Nichiren in 1277 and 1278, respectively. One of these explains the object of devotion he inscribed, and the other gives an overview of the principal teachings of the Lotus Sutra. From the content of these letters, it appears that she had firm faith, was well educated, and enjoyed some measure of wealth.
