Nichimyō [日妙] (n.d.): A lay follower of Nichiren who lived in Kamakura, Japan. Widowed, she traveled alone with her infant daughter, Oto, all the way from Kamakura to visit Nichiren while he was living in exile on Sado Island. In recognition of her pure faith, Nichiren sent a letter to her in Kamakura in the fifth month of 1272, in which he wrote: “You are the foremost votary of the Lotus Sutra among the women of Japan. Therefore, following the example of Bodhisattva Never Disparaging, I bestow on you the Buddhist name Sage Nichimyō [Sun Wonderful] ” (325).
