Nichizen [日禅] (d. 1331): Also known as Shō-bō or Shō-bō Nichizen. A disciple of Nichiren. He was a member of the Yui family of Kawai in the Fuji area, Japan. Originally a priest at Ryūsen-ji temple of the Tendai school in Atsuhara Village of Suruga Province, Nichizen took faith in Nichiren’s teachings in 1275 with his fellow priests Nisshū and Nichiben through Nikkō’s persuasion. He personally converted a number of laypersons in Atsuhara and remonstrated with Gyōchi, the deputy chief priest of Ryūsen-ji, during the Atsuhara Persecution. Nichizen served Nichiren at Minobu and later became one of Nikkō’s six elder disciples.
