Niike Saemon-no-jō [新池左衛門尉] (n.d.): A follower of Nichiren who lived at Niike in Iwata District of Tōtōmi Province, Japan, and an official of the Kamakura shogunate. Nikkō converted him and his wife, known as the lay nun Niike, to Nichiren’s teachings, and the two appear to have persisted in their faith and practice. In 1280 he received from Nichiren a letter known as Letter to Niike, which stresses the potential of Buddhahood within each human life, the importance of faith in realizing this potential, and the pitfalls of negligence in Buddhist practice.
