unsurpassed way [無上道] ( mujō-dō): The supreme teaching of the Buddha, which leads people to Buddhahood. The term unsurpassed way also refers to supreme enlightenment, or the state of Buddhahood. Shakyamuni Buddha says in the “Expedient Means” (second) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, “Honestly discarding expedient means, I will preach only the unsurpassed way.” In the “Life Span” (sixteenth) chapter of the sutra, he speaks of his aim and wish as follows: “At all times I think to myself: How can I cause living beings to gain entry into the unsurpassed way and quickly acquire the body of a Buddha?”
