upadesha [優婆提舎] (; ubadaisha): Discourses on the Buddha’s teachings. One of the twelve divisions of the Buddha’s teachings. Upadesha refers to Shakyamuni Buddha’s discourses on doctrine to his disciples, which took the form of questions and answers. The term also refers to discourses on the Buddha’s teachings by his disciples, including doctrinal treatises and commentaries on the sutras.
