Ujjayinī ［烏闍衍那国］ (; Pali Ujjenī;  Ujaenna-koku): Also known as Ujjayanī or Ujjainī. The capital of Avanti, one of the sixteen great states in India in Shakyamuni Buddha’s time. Ujjayinī corresponds to present-day Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh state, noted as one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus. According to tradition, Ashoka was governor of this region when he was a prince. Kātyāyana, one of Shakyamuni Buddha’s ten major disciples, was a native of Ujjayinī.
