Ueno, the lay nun [上野尼] (d. 1284) ( Ueno-ama): A lay follower of Nichiren. She was a daughter of Matsuno Rokurō Saemon and the wife of Nanjō Hyōe Shichirō, the steward of Ueno Village in Suruga Province in Japan. The name Ueno comes from Ueno Village, where her husband was steward. The couple had nine children, including Nanjō Tokimitsu. Sometime between 1260 and 1264, while on an official tour of duty in Kamakura, her husband met Nichiren and converted to his teachings. He died of illness in 1265, while she was pregnant with their last son. She went on to raise her children alone while maintaining faith in Nichiren’s teachings.
