Medicine Master [薬師如来] ( Bhaishajyaguru; Yakushi-nyorai): Also known as the Buddha of Medicine, the Buddha of Healing, or the Healing Buddha. The Thus Come One Medicine Master, the Buddha of the Pure Emerald World in the east. The Sanskrit bhaishajya means curativeness, medicine, or remedy; guru means teacher, master, or venerable person. Before he attained enlightenment, Medicine Master made twelve vows to cure all illnesses and lead all people to enlightenment. Belief in this Buddha was popular in both China and Japan, and many statues were made of him. He is often depicted as being flanked by the bodhisattvas Sunlight and Moonlight.
