Medicine Superior [薬上菩薩] ( Bhaishajyarājasamudgata or Bhaishajyasamudgata; Yakujō-bosatsu): One of the two bodhisattvas said to heal physical and spiritual illnesses, the other being Medicine King. According to the “King Wonderful Adornment” (twenty-seventh) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, in a previous life these two bodhisattvas were the princes Pure Storehouse and Pure Eye who converted their father, King Wonderful Adornment, to the correct teaching. The Sanskrit name Bhaishajyarājasamudgata means one who “has come forth from the king of medicine,” and Bhaishajyasamudgata, one who “has come forth from medicine.” Bhaishajya means medicine, rāja, king, and samudgata, appeared, risen up, or come forth. See also Medicine King.
