man of pure faith [清信士] (, Pali upāsaka; shōshin-ji): A Buddhist layman who has faith in the three treasures of the Buddha, the Law (his teachings), and the Buddhist Order, and has received the five precepts. “Man of pure faith” is the Chinese translation of the Sanskrit word upāsaka, a Buddhist layman. “Woman of pure faith” (upāsikā) is the female counterpart.
