Awa Province [安房国] ( Awa-no-kuni): Also known as Bōshū. The old name for the southern part of what is now Chiba Prefecture (adjacent to Tokyo) on the main island of Japan. In 1222 Nichiren was born in this province in a fishing village called Kataumi on the Pacific Ocean. Seichō-ji temple, where Nichiren first chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and publicly proclaimed his teaching, and Komatsubara, where the steward of Tōjō Village, Tōjō Kagenobu, and his warriors attacked him, are located in this province.
