Ajitavatī [阿恃多伐底河] (; Ajitabattei-ga): Also known as Airavatī, Ajiravatī, or Achiravatī. A river flowing through Kushinagara in India. According to The Record of the Western Regions, the Chinese priest Hsüan-tsang’s record of his travels through Central Asia and India in the seventh century, the Ajitavatī River is where Shakyamuni Buddha entered nirvana. Therefore the river is generally believed to be identical with the Hiranyavatī River, which is where Shakyamuni died in a grove of sal trees near its west bank.
