other shore [彼岸] ( higan): Also, farther shore or opposite shore. The shore of enlightenment; nirvana, or the state of enlightenment. The other shore contrasts with “this shore,” which means the realm of the sufferings of birth and death, or the state of delusion. The Sanskrit term pāramitā, a practice required of bodhisattvas, was rendered in Chinese as “to reach the other shore,” i.e., “to cross over from this shore of delusion to the other shore of enlightenment.” Pāramitā is usually translated into English as perfection.
