Ōhara Discourse [大原問答・大原談義] ( Ōhara-mondō or Ōhara-dangi): Also known as the Ōhara Debate. A discourse on the Pure Land teachings between Hōnen, who later founded the Japanese Pure Land (Jōdo) school, and the priests of other Buddhist schools. It was held at Shōrin-in temple in Ōhara, Kyoto, in 1186, at the request of Kenshin, later the chief priest of Enryaku-ji, the head temple of the Tendai school. There Hōnen expounded on the exclusive practice of the Pure Land teachings and won many converts.
