Gyōhyō [行表] (724–797): A priest of Yamato Province in Japan. He entered the priesthood in 741 and studied the teachings of the Precepts (Ritsu), Zen, Dharma Characteristics (Hossō), and Flower Garland (Kegon) schools. Later he moved to Sūfuku-ji temple in Ōmi Province and became its chief priest. Esteemed for his learning, Gyōhyō was appointed provincial teacher by the imperial court. In 778 he performed the ceremony in which Dengyō, who later founded the Tendai school, was ordained a priest. Gyōhyō later went to Daian-ji temple in Nara, where he spent the remainder of his life.
