gandharva [乾闥婆] (; kendatsuba): A heavenly musician or a god of music. In Buddhism, gandharvas constitute one of the eight kinds of nonhuman beings who protect Buddhism. They are said to serve the god Indra, known also as Shakra, as heavenly musicians and live on gandha, which means fragrance, scent, or perfume. Gandharva was rendered in Chinese as “god of fragrance.”
