Gennin [源仁] (818–887): A priest of the True Word (Shingon) school in Japan. At first he studied the doctrine of the Dharma Characteristics (Hossō) school, but later studied True Word Esotericism under Shinga and Shūei. In 885 he became the chief priest of Tō-ji temple. He built Nanchi-in temple in the Tō-ji temple complex and was revered as a great scholar of the esoteric teachings. He is also known as the Supervisor of Priests Nanchi-in and the Supervisor of Priests Ikegami.
