Kuntī [皐諦・皐諦女] (; Kōdai or Kōdai-nyo): One of the ten demon daughters who appear in the “Dhāranī” (twenty-sixth) chapter of the Lotus Sutra. After the ten demon daughters pledge in the presence of Shakyamuni Buddha to guard the practitioners of the sutra, the Buddha tells them: “If you can shield and guard those who accept and uphold the mere name of the Lotus Sutra, your merit will be immeasurable. How much more so if you shield and guard those who accept and uphold it in its entirety . . . Kuntī, you and your attendants should shield and guard the teachers of the Law such as these!” See also ten demon daughters.
