Kataumi [片海]: The birthplace of Nichiren (1222–1282). A place on the Pacific coast of thirteenth-century Japan in Tōjō Village of Awa Province (the southern part of present-day Chiba Prefecture). In his writing The Tripitaka Master Shan-wu-wei, Nichiren states, “I, Nichiren, am the son of a humble family, born along the shore in Kataumi of Tōjō in the province of Awa, a person who has neither authority nor virtue” (169).
