Kenshin [顕真] (1130–1192): The sixty-first chief priest of Enryaku-ji, the head temple of the Tendai school on Mount Hiei in Japan. He studied the exoteric teachings under Myōun and the esoteric teachings under Sōjitsu. In 1173 he retired to a temple at Ōhara, and in 1186 he invited Hōnen there to answer questions about the Pure Land teachings from himself and other priests (an event known as the Ōhara Discourse) and devoted himself to the exclusive practice of Nembutsu, or the chanting of Amida Buddha’s name. In 1190, against his wishes, he was appointed chief priest of Enryaku-ji and then under-administrator of priests.
