Constellation King Flower [宿王華] ( Nakshatra-rāja-samkusumitābhijna; Shukuōke): The bodhisattva who, in the “Medicine King” (twenty-third) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, asks Shakyamuni Buddha: “World-Honored One, how does the bodhisattva Medicine King come and go in the sahā world?” In reply, Shakyamuni reveals that a previous incarnation of Bodhisattva Medicine King was a bodhisattva named Gladly Seen by All Living Beings, who learned the Lotus Sutra from the Buddha Sun Moon Pure Bright Virtue and in gratitude made offerings to this Buddha and to the sutra. Shakyamuni says to Constellation King Flower, “After I have passed into extinction, in the last five-hundred-year period you must spread it abroad widely throughout Jambudvīpa and never allow it to be cut off.” The Buddha orders him to guard and protect the sutra with his transcendental powers because it provides good medicine for the ills of the people of the entire world.
