clear cool pond [清涼池] ( shōryō-chi): Also, clear cool lake. A pond or lake said to remove sufferings caused by earthly desires. According to The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom, when someone who is greatly afflicted enters a clear cool pond, that person is relieved of sufferings. The “Medicine King” (twenty-third) chapter of the Lotus Sutra says, “This sutra can bring great benefits to all living beings and fulfill their desires, as a clear cool pond can satisfy all those who are thirsty.” A clear cool pond is often likened to nirvana, or the realm that is free of afflictions.
