preparation section ［序分］ ( jo-bun): Also, preparation. One of the three sections or divisions of a sutra, the other two being revelation and transmission, into which the text of a sutra is divided for the purpose of interpreting its teachings. The preparation section consists of introductory remarks clarifying the reasons for expounding the sutra, preparing the way for the revelation of the core teaching of the sutra, and readying people to accept that teaching.
