Punyayashas [富那奢] (n.d.) (; Funasha): A native of Pātaliputra in Magadha, India. The tenth of Shakyamuni Buddha’s twenty-three, or the eleventh of his twenty-four, successors. He became a disciple of Pārshva, his predecessor among the Buddha’s successors, and received the teachings from him. Later he instructed and passed the teachings on to Ashvaghosha. Punyayashas is noted for having made skillful use of expedient means to lead many people to the Buddhist way.
