“Parable of the Medicinal Herbs” chapter [薬草喩品] ( Yakusōyu-hon): The fifth chapter of the Lotus Sutra. In this chapter, Shakyamuni Buddha relates the parable of the three kinds of medicinal herbs and two kinds of trees to illustrate that, although the Buddha’s teaching is the same, people who encounter it understand it differently and develop in different ways. According to the parable, rain falls equally upon all kinds of plants and trees, but they absorb the moisture differently and grow to varying heights according to their individual natures. In the same way, the Buddha impartially expounds only the one Buddha vehicle for all people, but their understanding and benefits differ according to their respective capacities.
