Pilindavatsa [畢陵伽婆蹉] (; Hitsuryōgabasha): One of Shakyamuni’s disciples, born to a Brahman family in Shrāvastī, India. It is said that prior to joining the Buddhist Order he had been overbearingly arrogant and contemptuous of others. He had had transcendental powers and been renowned for his practice of magic, but he lost these powers when he met Shakyamuni Buddha and converted to the Buddha’s teachings. The “Introduction” (first) chapter of the Lotus Sutra includes him among those who attended the assembly of the sutra.
