Dōji [道慈] (d. 744): A priest of the Three Treatises (Sanron) school in Japan. He learned the Three Treatises doctrine from Chizō of Hōryū-ji temple and the Dharma Characteristics (Hossō) doctrine from Gien of Ryūmon-ji temple. In 702 he went to China and studied the Three Treatises teaching under Yüan-k’ang, and Esoteric Buddhism under Shan-wu-wei ( Shubhakarasimha). After returning to Japan in 718, Dōji lived at Daian-ji temple and taught the Three Treatises teaching. This is known as the third transmission of the Three Treatises doctrine to Japan.
