Diamond Realm [金剛界] ( vajradhātu; kongō-kai): Also, Diamond World. A realm described in the Diamond Crown Sutra. The Sanskrit word vajra means diamond, which symbolizes hardness, indestructibility, or purity, and dhātu means realm. The term is contrasted with the Womb Realm described in the Mahāvairochana Sutra. The Diamond Realm represents the wisdom of Mahāvairochana Buddha, while the Womb Realm represents the fundamental truth that is identical with Mahāvairochana Buddha. Mahāvairochana’s wisdom is compared to the hardness and purity of a diamond because it can crush all earthly desires and illusions. The Diamond Realm is represented graphically in Esoteric Buddhism by the Diamond Realm mandala.
