dust particles of the land ［大地微塵］ ( daichi-mijin): An expression indicating an incalculable number. In Buddhist scriptures, phrases like “as numerous as the dust particles of the land” are often employed to express the incalculable worlds or kalpas, the countless number of bodhisattvas at a particular preaching assembly, or the great number of slanderers of the correct teaching. Similar expressions include “the dust particles of a world,” “the dust particles of a major world system,” and “the dust particles of all the worlds in the ten directions.” The phrase “the sands of the Ganges River” is also used to indicate an inconceivable number.
