Diamond Realm mandala [金剛界曼荼羅] ( kongōkai-mandara): Also, Diamond World mandala. One of the two mandalas of Esoteric Buddhism, the other being the Womb Realm mandala. Based on the Diamond Crown Sutra, this mandala depicts the Diamond Realm that represents the wisdom of Mahāvairochana Buddha. In contrast, the Womb Realm mandala, based on the Mahāvairochana Sutra, represents the fundamental principle of the universe, or the Dharma body of Mahāvairochana, perceived by this wisdom. The Diamond Realm mandala and the Womb Realm mandala are placed at the center of the esoteric rituals of the True Word ( Shingon) school. The Diamond Realm mandala is composed of nine square sections or assemblies; in these squares Mahāvairochana and other Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and gods are depicted, with Mahāvairochana in the central square.
