“Dhāranī” chapter [陀羅尼品] ( Darani-hon): The twenty-sixth chapter of the Lotus Sutra. In this chapter, the bodhisattvas Medicine King and Brave Donor, the heavenly gods such as Vaishravana and Upholder of the Nation, the ten demon daughters, and Mother of Demon Children recite dhāranīs with which to protect those who uphold and propagate the Lotus Sutra. Dhāranīs are mystic formulas that are said to protect those who recite them. The ten demon daughters and Mother of Demon Children, after chanting their dhāranīs, say, “If there are those who fail to heed our spells and trouble and disrupt the preachers of the Law, their heads will split into seven pieces like the branches of the arjaka tree.” Shakyamuni then describes the great benefit the daughters will receive for protecting the votaries of the sutra.
