Earnest Donor [能施太子] ( Mahādāna; Nōse-taishi): Also known as Great Donor. A prince described as Shakyamuni Buddha in a previous existence, whose story appears in the Sutra on the Wise and the Foolish, The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom by Nāgārjuna, and elsewhere. Prince Earnest Donor felt pity for the poor and suffering people of his country and entreated his father, the king, to give all his treasures to them. When his father had exhausted his treasures, Prince Earnest Donor went into the sea to look for a fabulous wish-granting jewel belonging to the dragon king. Overcoming many obstacles, he finally obtained the jewel and brought it back with him, causing treasures to rain down upon his people.
