Fo-t’u-teng [仏図澄] (232–348) (PY Fotudeng; Buttochō): A monk of Central Asia who went to Lo-yang in China in 310, where he propagated Buddhism. He was highly esteemed by the ruler of the Later Chao dynasty, whom he advised on such matters as military administration, culture, and politics. He is said to have built about nine hundred temples and helped lay the foundation for the spread of Buddhism in China.
