In Japan, an esoteric prayer ritual known as the “ceremony of the five altars” was performed in order to defeat enemies during the Heian (794–1185) and the Kamakura (1185–1333) periods. In this ceremony, images of the five great wisdom kings were enshrined in five altars and were worshiped.
