three ascetics [三仙] ( san-sen): Kapila, Ulūka, and Rishabha. Kapila was the founder of the Sāmkhya school, one of the six schools of Vedic philosophy in ancient India. Ulūka, also known as Kanāda, founded the Vaisheshika school, another of the six Vedic schools. Rishabha is said to have maintained the importance of asceticism, and his teachings to have prepared the way for Jainism.
