ten good precepts [十善戒] ( jū-zen-kai): The precepts prohibiting commission of the ten evil acts, which are (1) killing, (2) stealing, (3) sexual misconduct, (4) lying, (5) flattery or indiscriminate and irresponsible speech, (6) defamation, (7) duplicity, (8) greed, (9) anger, and (10) foolishness or the holding of mistaken views. According to Buddhist scriptures, if one abides by the ten good precepts, one will be reborn a king; also, those who have become kings are viewed as having been able to do so due to their observance of the ten good precepts in a previous lifetime.
