Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice, The [瑜伽師地論] ( Yogāchārabhūmi; Chin Yü-ch’ieh-shih-ti-lun; Yugashiji-ron): A work attributed to either Maitreya or Asanga and translated into Chinese in the mid-seventh century by Hsüan-tsang. One of the principal treatises of the Dharma Characteristics (Chin Fa-hsiang; Hossō) school, it consists of one hundred volumes and elucidates the seventeen stages through which the practitioners of the Consciousness-Only doctrine advance toward enlightenment. The work quotes the Revelation of the Profound Secrets Sutra and explains the Consciousness-Only doctrine, particularly with respect to the ālaya-consciousness. Yogic practice was the chief discipline of the Consciousness-Only school, hence the title of this work.
