three circles [三輪] ( san-rin): The windy circle, watery circle, and gold circle said to lie at the base of the Sumeru world and support it, according to the ancient Indian worldview. They are cylindrical in form and lie one upon another. The windy circle is located at the bottom and rests on space. Upon the windy circle is the watery circle, and upon the watery circle is the gold circle, on which the earth rests with its Mount Sumeru, seas, mountains, and four continents.
